1967 At 50
1967 ... That Was The Year That Was
A year-end is always an occasion for remembrance, and thus an occasion for a film retrospective. The Oxford English Dictionaries’ odd choice for Word Of The Year, Youthquake, suggests a theme for this year. The OED’s choice has caused comment on social media as it’s not a new term but goes back to the late Sixties. This has reminded me that 2017 was the 50th anniversary of the pivotal year in this context, 1967. Hence, a ‘1967 At 50 FilmFest’.

In 1967, more and more baby-boomers born in the aftermath of WW2 were reaching the age of independent filmgoing, and films had to be made increasingly with a youth audience in mind. The film industry’s staid self-censorship code (est. in the US in 1934) was just about to end. Part of this was the insistence of the US Hays Office Code and the British Board of Film Censors that ‘authority figures’ (like policemen) were sacred cows, not to be mocked or depicted as incompetent or corrupt. Such sacred cows were primary targets of the social satire boom which had begun on British tv in 1962 with the weekly BBC news-roundup revue programme That Was The Year That Was (TW3 for short), which generated a US version in 1964-5. After these and other revue programmes were cancelled from network tv as too edgy, their creative talents, particularly in Britain, branched out into feature films, like Bedazzled [listed below] with Peter Cook and Dudley Moore.

After dominating for many years, the ‘American postwar recovery’ storyline and its British counterpart (with different tropes) the ‘British postwar-adjustment’ story, had fallen into disuse. The list below tries to reflect this transitional moment, and many of the more traditional films are not included. This includes box-office hits like the Disney Jungle Book, Guess Who's Coming To Dinner, You Only Live Twice, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Camelot, Casino Royale, In Like Flint, Doctor Dolittle , and the Burton-Taylor Taming Of The Shrew. As it’s the 50th anniversary, the list has 50 films on it, in a diverse range of storylines, as indicated. These were all playing in cinemas in 1967, though a few had been initially released in late 1966. (We had to omit Seconds from the list as its general release was curtailed following a hostile Cannes Film Fest reception.) It was also a time when foreign subtitled films made their breakthrough from the art-house cinema circuit to mainstream release. Fewer than half the 50 titles below are US productions.
Titles are listed alphabetically below together with the relevant storyline. (In some cases, there is more than one, part of their appeal being that they were 'crossover' films.)
